Driving on I-40/85 heading to Shelby through pounding rains and hydroplaning vehicles bouncing off guardrails, it was hard to believe that the grand opening events for the Earl Scruggs Center that we hoped to attend would not be washed away. Upon our arrival in Shelby, we dashed in Bridges BBQ for lunch and as delicious as the sandwiches were, sharing the banana pudding nearly caused a fight between Stormy and me. I did get in the last “licks” – yummy! Sadly the street part of the festival and the surprise bluegrass flash mob was cancelled, but the indoor events more than made up for the loss. We enjoyed a “preview” tour of the Earl Scruggs Center which is a marvel and extremely well done. Although our tickets to the sold out Remembering Earl: Music & Stories concert last night were in the very very very back (think 8 flights of stairs and oxygen required), we still found ourselves in awe of the incredible music that Vince Gill, Travis Tritt, Sam Bush, Rob Ickes, Gary Scruggs, Randy Scruggs, Jim Mills, and John Gardner scrubbed off.
At one event we were served Earl’s favorite, cookies and milk and this oreo cookie cake:
