Music and Travel

Now that the holidays are over, I am off to Florida to help my Mom with some business down there. To quickly explain why I have been so slack in posting, I have been very absorbed with music. Planned surgeries for a couple of band members required compacting as much music as could be squeezed into the time we had before our band took a hiatus.

To see a few selections from our last concert, please click on the photo to the right.  That will open my Youtube playlist from our last show.

Sunny and the Sodbusters at Christmas Fair

While our lead mandolin player recuperates from surgery, our community is sharing dog sitting responsibilities.  I help Roxanne with the morning 7:15 am shift.  Here is a story from our first day as dog sitters.

From Brin (the dog's) Diary

Dear Diary,

Today those two crazy women show up again at my house around 7:15am. They tried to
kidnap me earlier this week while I was having breakfast with Sundance. But that day I refused to go with them. Now I am alone and I am not sure what their deal is. They do not bring Sundance or Barbara back with them. They call my name a few times and pet me. I cannot figure out what they want, so I go back to bed.

They finally put my collar on me so I assume they want me to take them for a walk. Knowing that they have been on walks before, I mistakenly think they know how to behave. I am a little
concerned that they are leading me out of the park. But I have been out in the desert with
Sundance. I believe I will be able to control them. Boy am I wrong.

A Walking Disaster

We have only walked a few hundred feet, when the one that answers to Roxanne picks up a stick. When she tries to throw it, the frost on her glove adheres to the bark. She must have been trying to teach the one called Sunny how to play catch. Instead of
throwing the stick though, she whacks Sunny in the mouth with it. I thought everyone
knew how to play fetch! Not these two. They could have asked me and I would have trained them. But noooo, now we are leaving a bloody trail across the desert. On the up side, no matter where they take me I will be able to follow the trail of blood back. Not sure they will though.

With Sunny holding an old paper towel to her bleeding lip, we continue away from home on a familiar path. Once we reach the big, wide wash, Roxanne takes me off the leash. No way am I letting these two wander out here without me. I am sure I will get the blame if they never return. I lay down in the dirt and roll around to make it clear that if they don’t hook my leash back up, I am staying right here. They finally get the message and we proceed to hike up the wash until we reach a partially built rock wall. I don’t smell any dog poop around this pile of rocks so I know it is not the kind of man made rock formation that I am used to seeing built out here.

Return trip

Maybe this is some sort of weird cat shrine. Whatever it is, they each add a stone to the pile then we turn around and head back up the wash. I stay on alert for any unwelcome feline interference. Who knows what devilment these two are up to. They give me a half of a treat at this point. I have no idea why. I guess they are trying to bribe me into leading them home.

And the giggling! I have never heard so much hysteria in my life. Two miles of non-stop laughter while I try to guide them toward the most direct route back home. It would be nice to get back in the park before Sunny needs a transfusion. I am so relieved to finally return to my own house even though it is awfully empty right now. I take my pill and go to bed. God, I hope everyday is not going to be like this. Where oh where are my people? What did I do to deserve this?

Epilogue

Please don’t worry too much about our initial misadventure.  None of my teeth fell out and my lip finally stopped bleeding. Brin was much happier with us today.  She actually let us off the lease.

As she wandered back and forth along the wash, she seemed to enjoy the freedom from worrying with us. She came running whenever we called her name. I think she still has reservations about our ability to walk safely without her.

Hope you enjoyed this tale. I am off to Florida for a couple of weeks.

Have a Happy New Year!!

In Loving Memory
