Climbing Klondike Bluffs into Arches

Jack and MJ offer to lead us on a ride into the backdoor of Arches NP via the Klondike Bluffs Trail. I like entering Arches via off-road routes this time of year. The paved road into the park and its attractions are usually packed with vacation pressured visitors jousting (sometimes with extended middle fingers – for shame) to secure a parking space.

I thought they were bluffing

Each footprint on this trails was circled with rocks – oh that’s how they found them!

When we enter the park on dirt roads, we rarely ever see another vehicle. Instead we admire remote arches never seen from a tour bus. To be prepared for this trip, I immediately consult my trail book for an estimation of the horrors I might face on the trail. Somehow I misread the trail descriptions. I think the book describes the entire ride into Arches by way of the Bluffs as a cakewalk.

The way I read it, there is only supposed to be one “kind of tough” place on the way to Tower Arch. There are no other named obstacles on this trail. I guess that is because the obstacles on this trail are a SURPRISE! As you can see in the video below even a group of women on bikes take this trail faster than our jeeps.

I rate this trail as scenic, remote and at one point covered with dinosaur footprints.  In fact, one section looks like they had a dinosaur party up there.  However, I am exhausted from the numerous rough spots and weird obstacles tossing me about the Jeep interior. After today’s ride, I am no longer going to concern myself with a trail’s rating. Just bring it on!

  1. “After today’s ride, I am no longer going to concern myself with a trail’s rating. Just bring it on!”That’s the spirit! I put that right up there with “hold my beer while I try this” and “it seemed like a good idea at the time”. ?
