Fredericksburg. Texas

OMG – only one day to spend here???? What were we thinking? Shopping!!! The National Museum of the Pacific War (at least 2 full days required for this)! Winerys everywhere!! Festivals every weekend (this weekend the gourd festival and we did not even have time to enjoy it)!

We only had one day here so we made the best of it with a little shopping and museum visiting. The Hanger Hotel was fabulous and right on the ranp at Gillispie County (Fredericksburg) Airport. We will be back, hopefully in the little airplane, so we can taxi right up to the hotel door.

McDonald Observatory

After enjoying a serenade by Victor from the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, we left Big Bend to return to Fort Davis and the McDonald Observatory. We spent the night with an Astronomer (well not ALL night – he stayed up looking at the stars and we went to sleep).

We learned how solar systems are born and what happens when stars die. They let us look through the telescope at a star being born and a different star dying. Unfornately, they would not let Charlie look for space junk on the moon so he was a little disappointed.

On to Big Bend

From the Indian Lodge we made our way to Big Bend and the lodge there. We took Texas scenic highway 170 along the Rio Grande.

Relative humidy here is around 17% with temperatures in the 90s. I understand now why tourist season at Big Bend does not really pick up until November. I can’t wait to get back home and into a “humid” climate before I wind uplooking like a desert myself!

Fort Davis

In answer to your question, no we have not had to ride in any rain. We did bring a good storm to San Antonio and they were very grateful, but we were able to tour the city on foot while the residents enjoyed a lovely Sunday morning rain. Pics above are from Fort Davis State park where we stayed at the Indian Lodge. A lovely place quite unlike the dreadful teepees of Kentucky.

Be sure to request your copy of the DVD when we return. That is the only way that you will get to experience Jeannie B – state park hostess/storyteller extraordinare!
